Muscat: Omantel, the Sultanate’s first and largest provider of integrated telecommunications services, has signed a Memorandum of Understanding with Oman Oil Marketing Company (OOMCO) to accelerate digital transformation across Oman.
The deal will enable the first artificial intelligence and IoT-based smart store in Oman and the Middle East, with an enhanced queue-free, cashless and take-out shopping experience.
The MoU describes the strategic partnership between the two industry leaders. Omantel will provide the necessary smart technologies. OOMCO will bring a new mix of products compatible with store technologies, leading the retail and convenience industry into an improved, smart and profitable future.

Retail IoT is revolutionizing the way people shop, adding more convenience to their experience as they don’t have to wait at the billing counter or use cash or a card to pay. Combining artificial intelligence, smart shelf sensors, cameras and an application linked to a mobile wallet, the Ahlain Store concept is expected to become operational in the second half of this year.

Located at Omantel’s headquarters in Madinat Al Irfan, the store will be equipped with in-store cameras that capture shoppers’ movements in the aisles, while smart sensors on the shelves will track the products that shoppers put in their baskets. Items chosen by buyers will continue to be added to their virtual shopping cart via an application developed by Omantel. Customers’ mobile wallets will be charged for items purchased as they leave the store and a receipt will be sent to them electronically.
